Awakening

‘Maggi’ is not just a noodle brand; it has been an incessant companion for years; and a synonym for effortlessness. When young, I used to be a big ‘Maggi buff’. Whether hostel or home, I never ran ‘Maggiless’. Whenever any adventure was planned, packing would not cease until ‘it’ was in there. Can you imagine the joy of making maggi noodles in a jungle with two stones, some logs and fire, delicious I bet! Even now, after a long tiring day when I come back home, with tummy craving for something, the first thing that comes to mind is “Maggi”. One noodle with umpteen roles and single aim, “making life less complicated”. Such is the bond I shared with Maggi Noodles.

But lately, all this bonding faded after hearing the claims of above permissible levels of Lead and MSG in my long time partner. ‘Lead’ undoubtedly is a not good sign for such a brand, everybody trusted with whole heart. How could someone be so careless? So ignoramus? You are not selling a product out there but “trust” my dear. You are supposed to feel concerned for our welfare. Now it is being alleged that the water used for making them, could be the culprit. But aren’t you expected to test everything including water, beforehand. After all, it’s a matter of public health, Yes, the public who loved you so dearly. I am not just talking about the company in question right now, I am pointing towards the manufacture of each and every product which is making its way into our body. Can’t you be a little more considerate? Who knows what is in there in that chocolate we are munching? The juice we are sipping? The pizza we are biting, blindly? I don’t understand why human life is not being valued here?

Undoubtedly, there have been lapse on the part of Company and truth is, “it contained Lead” but how many of us ever thought, “Where did this Lead come from?” Let me refresh your memory. You remember that rivulet on the way to office, where foam has almost replaced water. I hope you know that it comes from a nearby factory. ‘This’ uncontrolled discharge of industries, is the source of Lead in water. And those festivals when we religiously drown colossal painted idols in water bodies, ‘that’ is the source of lead in water. These are just a few examples. Do you think it stops here? No, it doesn’t!  Lead enters the adjoining soil and quite obviously the crops and eventually, our food chain. So how safe is the food you are making at home and how safe is the water you are drinking? It’s up to you, to think.

We the humans, ignorantly direct the waste in to water bodies as if some miracle is going to take care of it. We have to understand that this is not going anywhere but coming back to us in one or the other form. This time it is lead, next time it will be something else. Now the question is, are we going to change the situation ourselves? Or keep blaming the government or other bodies, for not taking care of us, for not giving us clean water to drink, blah blah. When are we going to realize that government is no magician and nothing can change overnight? As they say, “charity begins at home”, stop or at least go easy on degrading your environment and hope for less such accidents in future. Wake up buddies, it’s high time. Take care of your environment and it will take care of you.

For now,  news is: Maggi is not coming back, our ‘two minute magic” is not coming back.
